Dr Walker's Church of England Primary School

An Exceptional Place to Flourish

Learning activities set Monday 11th May 2020

Hello Hedgehogs.

I hope you are all keeping well and enjoying the weather (when it decides to be nice enough).

We have lots more activities for you this week, so please enjoy and share with us.

Mr Evans

What I have been upto

I have been trying to make the most of the nice weather and going out for plenty of walks with my wife and exploring lots of places around Harlow.

We've managed to get through 3 different jigsaw puzzles this week, it has been a nice way of keeping my brain busy (even if I am not very good at them).

Been watching lots of films, including celebrating Star Wars day (May the Fourth).

Here are the next chapters of Varjak Paw with mini activities as part of each video!

Chapter 11

Chapter 12

Chapters 13 and 14

Chapter 15

English Task

We have another set of SPAG mats for you to try. Make sure you choose the correct year group and work through the tasks.

As well as making sure you get onto Sumdog, there are two tasks for Maths again this week.

I've chosen activities that link to what you have already been learning in Maths for extra practice.

Year 3 - Yours is Exercise Challenge

Year 4 - Yours is Solve it (the 0-9 solve it cards are useful for this)

This week in art we want you to try and make a bookmark with your name on it. Sounds simple right? Well, we want you to write your name on your bookmark in Hieroglyphics, just the same way the Ancient Egyptians would have (if they had bookmarks).

You could add Ancient Egyptian style patterns or drawings to it, we are looking to see how creative you can be.

That is Mr Evans in Hieroglyphics, though not as colourful or as interesting looking as I reckon yours will be.

The pdf below will help you with your Hieroglyphic letters. I am really looking forward to seeing what you come up with.

Can you design and make an Egyptian instrument using  recycled items from around your home? Remember to plan first and then try to build. Can you make them so they make noise?

Here are some example instruments that would have been around during Ancient Egyptian times.

For your first science task we want you to have a look at food chains. We want you to try and make some food chains; showing and labelling the producers, prey and predators. How many different ones can you think of? Can you include animals you have seen recently?

Use the linked powerpoint below to help remind you as well as trying the quiz too.

Task 2: Have a go at this lava lamp experiment. If you don't have all the things you need, don't worry, just wait until you can and then try it.

Look at the pdf before to help you. Either in your exercise book or on your wiki page write your three top facts about Hieroglyphics and why you choose them.

Can you find any other facts about Hieroglyphics? Can you find something surprising?

For Geography this week, we want you to do some research and explaining.  We have been looking at Ancient Egypt as our learning quest topic, but this week we want you to look at today's Egypt.

We want you to create an information page looking at Egypt's human geography. Have a look for some of these things:

  • Types of places that people live
  • How they use the land in their country
  • Economic activity
  • What things they trade to other countries
  • What natural resources they have in their country
  • What food they grow and where

Use the links below to give you a bit of a start on finding some information.

Create a fact file about Egyptian Instruments, using the link below to help you. Can you find any similarities between instruments they used and some of the ones we use today?

Carry on with P.E. with Joe Wicks, or anyone else you have seen that you prefer.

What has been your favourite exercise to do during lockdown so far? Why is it your favourite? Can you explain it to someone else?

In R.E. this week I would like you to think about symbols that are important to Christians.  The activity below mentions the instructions for you, you may need to do some research into Christian symbols (can you find more than just the cross?).

It also mentions a painted stone, that part is definitely optional (though if you do paint your symbol on a stone than please post it to twitter or send it to me and Mrs Walker as we would love to see what you've done).

Sit in the garden (if you have one; if not try to find somewhere safe and quiet), still and quiet. Take a notepad and pen. Every time you hear a different noise, write it down until you get to 10. Do it at different times of the day and see what you hear.

Journaling - Who makes me happy?

He wakes me up; He makes me sleep.

Provides for me the food I eat.

When I cry, I call on him,

Because I know with him I win.

Even through the hardest day,

I trust in him in every way.

He's the One who sees me through,

Jesus lives, I know it's true.

With loving kindness, he smiles on me.

Because he died, I am free.

Lord, for all, I thank you so,

I know you'll never let me go!
