This is the first session from our Power Of Reading book! However, we still are keeping it a secret!
Session 1: you will be visualising and exploring descriptive language.
Look at the pictures below of the Antartic and ask the children to share their initial responses to the images.
Where do they think it is?
What clues makes them think this?
What would it be like to be in this place?
How would it feel to be there?
How would you feel about going there?
Have you been to a place like this?
Can you create your own painting of the landscape (encouraging them to focus on their use of colour)
After the picture is finished, ask them to describe the scene. Encourage use of precise vocabulary (e.g. better words for cold – freezing, chilly, icy, frozen, biting)
Focus on how it would feel to be there as well as what it looks like.
Record examples of effective vocabulary around the picture or on paper.
