In Reception and KS1, children follow the Letters and sounds phonics programme. This is a fast paced fun and engaging way for children to learn sounds in the school. In Reception they cover phase 1/2/3 and will learn some aspects of phase 4 in the summer term. In year 1 they will learn phase 4 and 5 and will be ready for their phonics screening in June of that year. In Year 2, phase 6 will be taught.
At Dr Walker’s phonics is taught in an active way taking into account many different learning styles. Parents and carers are given more information in Reception about the programme and in Year 1 parents and carers are invited to a phonics screening information session with workshop.
At Dr Walker’s we follow the framework closely of the NC objectives for English. The power of reading books are used in addition as an engaging resource for each half term for the children. English objectives are carried through all areas of our curriculum and within our half termly learning question children learn in a cross curricular style which means English skills are continually reinforced.
The above gives some information about the Power of Reading philosophy.
